Getty Villa

Getty Villa

The Getty Villa vividly evokes the classical world in both its landscape and architecture. Modeled after the Villa dei Papiri, a first-century Roman country house, the Villa is airy and sunlit, featuring mosaic floors and colorful trompe l’oeil walls and paintings. Its four gardens and grounds are surrounded with plant species that would have been found in the ancient Mediterranean, creating lush and fragrant places to stroll. The Getty Villa Museum houses the Getty’s extensive collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. Complementing the collections and exhibitions are a wide variety of public programs, weaving together art, performances, family activities, lecture and theater to serve as a gateway to the classical past. The Villa presents an annual outdoor theater production in a dramatic classical theater based on ancient prototypes. In addition, the Villa hosts staged play readings, musical performances, film screenings, artist demonstrations, lectures, workshops and other special events. Visitors can enjoy outdoor dining in a casual Mediterranean-themed café and nearby coffee cart. Admission to the Villa is always free, but advance timed tickets are required and can be obtained at getty.edu or at (310) 440-7300.
