Situated in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains in Brentwood, the Getty Center incorporates the modern design of architect Richard Meier, with beautiful gardens, open spaces, and spectacular views of Los Angeles, the ocean, and the mountains. The Central Garden, created by artist Robert Irwin, is an evolving work of art, with tree-lined walkways that lead visitors through extraordinary sights, sounds, and scents. The Getty Center houses the Getty Center Museum, with a collection reaching across European history from medieval times to the present, featuring paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings, manuscripts and photographs from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The Getty Research Institute offers exhibitions from its world-renowned special collections, spanning global art history. The Getty also offers a varied calendar of music, dance, film, talks, classes, tours and special events. Visitors arrive at the Getty Center via a tram that glides up the hillside. An elegant restaurant, casual cafeteria, and coffee carts offer a range of dining options. Since the site opened in 1997, more than 20 million visitors from all over the world have enjoyed the views, the artwork, and the striking architecture. Admission is always free and no reservations are required.
